One of the most starkly vivid and detailed accounts of survival in Georgia's notorious Andersonville prison during the American Civil War.
John Ransom was only 20 years old at the time of his capture. He kept a nearly daily diary during his year of misery at the Confederate prison. He and his fellow Union prisoners endured lice, starvation, freezing cold, killing heat, theft from other inmates...and Captain Wirtz.
"Capt. Wirtz very domineering and abusive. Is afraid to come into camp any more. There are a thousand men in here who would willingly die if they could kill him first."
Death was a daily occurrence. Yet Ransom knew if he gave up hope, he would die. He somehow kept his humor and kept on writing. Through two escapes, time in a Rebel hospital, and eventual freedom, you'll read a POW account like none you've ever read before.
During one escape, he vowed, "Shall print this diary and make my everlasting fortune, and when wealthy will visit this country and make every negro who has helped us millionaires."
For less than you'd spend on gas going to the library, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones.

Andersonville Diary Expanded Annotated eBook John L Ransom
I enjoyed this book because it was based on a true story of a soldier from the Civil War and him being captive in the Andersonville Prison. I had ancestors that were captive there and reading this brought to life their suffering. I was trying to see if their names were mentioned in the roster that is inside the book but I'm uncertain if they are. Learning from the past helps us to not let those things happen in the future.Product details

Andersonville Diary Expanded Annotated eBook John L Ransom Reviews
Great read depicting hash reality of incompetence at he highest levels. War is hell but this prison was worse for the men left there.
Thank you
Very informative.
I have read again and again
the book had more information in it than anticipated, including a list of officers at Camp Asylum, a prisoner exchange camp. The book brings life at Andersonville for the prisoners there so realistically that you would think you were there. Great History Lesson!
A fascinating first hand account of pure hell and how one man survived it.
The language is from the 19th century but it is very readable and while it is 'history' it is like a novel.
Brutally honest, told by a prisoner. Moving...a piece of history not a fiction novel. Andersonville was worse than any movie can depict.
